In Syd’s Voice Book Review: The Extraordinary Story of Dave Lawrence
In Syd’s Voice: The Extraordinary Life of Dave Lawrence, written by Dean Wilson and published by Fairfield Books in June 2025, is a compelling, uplifting and deeply human autobiography from the late England fast bowler Dave ‘Syd’ Lawrence. The book, based on a series of interviews between September and December 2024, became a poignant race against time before Syd lost his voice due to Motor Neurone Disease (MND). More than just a sporting memoir, this is an inspiring story of resilience, identity and legacy, told in Syd’s unmistakable voice.
A Life of Firsts and Fierce Determination
Born in Gloucester to Jamaican parents, Dave Lawrence rose swiftly through county cricket. By age 17, he was playing for Gloucestershire, and in 1988 made his England debut—even going on to take a famed five‑wicket haul against the West Indies at The Oval in 1991. But then tragedy struck: in early 1992, during a Test in New Zealand, Syd shattered his kneecap—a crippling injury that seemed to end his career at just 28.
Despite this setback, Syd’s refusal to quit saw him attempt comebacks, including a brief return in county cricket in 1997. During his post‑cricket years he built success away from the pitch—owning a Bristol nightclub, coaching youngsters, and even winning the West of England amateur bodybuilding title three times. Each chapter of his life demonstrates his tenacious pride and willpower.
Confronting Racism and Embracing Identity
One of the most searing parts of the book is Syd’s discussion of racism within cricket. From the infamous banana‑skin incident outside his hotel door to frustrations at teammates involved in rebel tours to apartheid South Africa, Syd’s accounts are candid and sober. Yet these stories are not merely recalled—they’re reflected upon with maturity and dignity. Readers will appreciate how Syd channels challenges into personal and collective growth.
A Race Against Time
In June 2024, Syd was diagnosed with MND after struggling with impaired mobility, a cruel new battle for an athlete whose livelihood had been physical in every sense. Suddenly aware that his powerful voice might be silenced, he and Dean Wilson raced to complete the book before Syd’s ability to speak faded.
Their last recording session in early December saw Syd struggling even to speak—a heart‑wrenching scene that makes the title tragically apt. But his spirit rings loud across the page. A later MBE for services to cricket arrives just before his death in June 2025, emphasising the respect he earned beyond the boundary.
Writing Style and Structure
Across 240 pages, the narrative is concise yet emotionally rich. Dean Wilson—longtime Mirror cricket correspondent and Chair of the Cricket Writers’ Club—structures the memoir chronologically from childhood to diagnosis. Interspersed with archive photos, these visual touches deepen appreciation for Syd’s vibrant life Fairfield Books. The tone balances vivid sporting anecdotes and raw personal honesty, never feeling overwrought or sentimental.
Emotional Weight and Lasting Messages
Emotion is the book’s core. Critics agree: Cricket Web rated it five stars, admitting “I had to dab with a tissue… more than once”. Derbyshire Cricket’s Peakfan described it as “the extraordinary recounting of an extraordinary life… a book that will live long in the memory”.
